Fallingwithscissors are probably one of the most exciting acts in metalcore that you’ve never heard of—until now, at least. Erupting out of seemingly nowhere with their breakout EP, The Death and Birth of an Angel earned themselves a startling amount of notoriety. The band take metalcore to a figurative (and literal, if you take their name seriously) chopping block, borrowing spastic, noisy and glitchy elements from the likes of Vein while maintaining an underlying heir of good ol’ metalcore ethos. The Death and Birth of an Angel is the spirit of early 2000s metalcore digitized, soaked in amphetamines and white monster and pushed forth into the modern age. An unpredictable and chaotic sequence of introductory tracks give way to songs like “Atrophy:Angel” that are as beautiful as they are impossible to memorize, with each listen through rewarding the listener with a new snippet—or Easter egg. The result is a dizzying but devastating and robust EP that defines a very specific—and masterfully done—iteration of metalcore in a time where standards have rapidly fallen. Fallingwithscissors are without a doubt a band to know now, if you don’t yet.
