Mathcore is a huge umbrella that captures bands that range from the spastic fits of Tera Melos or the groovy, technical stylings of Arsonists Get All the Girls to the outright sonic oppression from bands like The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. Unifying these themes—and many more—is the prodigal act Gnostician. A stunning, mesmerizing amalgam of chaotic, frenzied mathcore infused with melancholic post-hardcore flourishes and flashes of blitzing aggression, the band’s debut LP Unification as an Art sets a high bar for mathcore in the year 2025. On one hand, the sprawling three-installment Corpus series offers remarkable continuity and steady, immersive world building. On the other hand, “Dwarf Star Partition” and “Alkazoth” offer brisk, bone-snapping forays through mathcore in a manner more consistent with what the listener might expect. Bristling with surprises throughout its entirety, Unification as an Art is a strong and accessible example of artistic, fulfilling mathcore that holds true to the core tenets of the genre while being unafraid to branch out and explore a variety of sounds, styles and dynamics.
